Beware of this new SARS scam

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has warned taxpayers to remain vigilant ahead of the latest scam doing the rounds.

According to SARS, the latest scam involves taxpayers receiving an SMS saying they are conducting an audit on a tax refund.

Scammers will try anything to get people to click on unauthorised links so they can get your information and ultimately steal your money.

Once taxpayers click on the link in the SMS, they are led to a phishing website that is designed to steal their information and access their money.

With the 2025 tax season underway, many people will assume that the SMS is legit and click on it without giving it a second thought.

Check out the video from That Cyber Safety Guy, Michael Buswell on Instagram. He says that the best way to avoid being caught in a scam is to never click on any strange links sent to you.

He also said that if you are unsure whether the link is from a trusted source, you can easily run the link through a link checker from a reputable source.

SARS has advised taxpayers to always make sure the email or SMS is genuine before clicking on any link.

Protect yourself from scams and phishing:

  • Do not open or respond to emails from unknown sources.
  • Beware of emails or SMSs asking for personal, tax, banking or eFiling details.
  • SARS will never send you hyperlinks to other websites.

If you are uncertain about a SARS scam, simply contact their IT team at [email protected]. For all known scams, visit the Scams and Phishing webpage on the SARS website.
