What's mine is yours? Woman donates her uterus to her sister
A bond like no other...
There's a bond between sisters that sometimes cannot be described.
We know that Carol Ofori has tried to describe the bond she shares with her bestie, aka her sister Refilwe.
But nothing quite pays the true sistership justice.
Well, until now.
A woman who has two kids of her own and no intention of adding to her kinship, decided to donate her uterus to her younger sister.
Making history in the United Kingdom, doctors performed the first womb transplant in the country.
"The recipient, a 34-year-old woman from England, had been holding onto the embryos because she intended to use IVF later this year. Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH), an uncommon disease affecting one in 5,000 women, was present at birth in the woman who underwent the womb transplant." (MSN)
The woman is doing well and her plans for IVF were all on track, according to the surgeon who performed the procedure.
The procedure cost £25,000 (R600,000), which was covered by the non-profit Womb Transplant UK.
The whole affair was an emotional one for everyone concerned, including the 30-person staff conducting the surgery.
