Waterspout over Ballito leaves some KZNers on high alert
Weather warnings and natural phenomena have made us uneasy about seeing anything close to tornado-like.
A video shared on social media earlier today has left many uneasy.
The video shows what some have called a 'funnel cloud' or tornado, moving over the ocean in Ballito, northern KZN. A funnel cloud is a tapered column of water droplets extending downward from the parent cloud's base. "It is commonly mixed with and perhaps enveloped by dust and debris lifted from the surface." (Britannica)
However, the video is said to have shown a waterspout, not a tornado. According to the South African Weather Services (SAWS), a waterspout is a tornado over water.
Earlier today, around 4 pm, the waterspout was said to have occurred in Ballito, KZN.

Last year's devastating tornado left many KZNers feeling uneasy about the weather. Hence, we see many KZNers spreading the video online to create awareness, but they are causing some anxiety.
Tasneem Moosa said, "OMG..I saw this this afternoon from my apartment in Musgrave over the Harbour and I really thought it was a twister."
Another person said, "We saw this today, incredible."
The What's On Durban team said, "Over Ballito this afternoon. Don’t worry, it’s not a tornado - it’s a fairly common waterspout."
