If you grew up in Durban, regardless of your background, your religion or your family's financial situation, visiting West Street to see the Christmas lights was a must.

West Street was a buzz during Christmas for families who would park their cars and walk along the roadside to enjoy the lights and even the shops.

Now called Dr Pixley kaSeme Street, we are all so humbled to see the lights shining bright this Christmas.

While we have become spoilt for choice when it comes to Christmas lights in and around Durban - from the Trail of lights to the homes that light up the neighbourhoods during the festive season - there's something wholesome and nostalgic about the lights on West Street.

And the people on social media agree.

"I remember being a little girl visiting my great aunt who lived in Durban and going for a drive around the streets at night. It was magical."

"Are you serious, it looks stunning, if Durbs can do this so can rest of country"
