Mzansi laugh over parent helping kid with homework
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Is this at all relatable for parents? Yyyyyyyes, of course!

Whether you're a parent or not, we can all agree that homework isn't always as easy as we think or as straightforward as it used to be. While it is meant to help you improve in a particular subject, it can also be challenging.
An even greater challenge is being a parent trying to help your child with homework. As a parent, you're expected to be 'all-knowing' and the centre of your child's world. They look to you for guidance in every possible way, so naturally, they might think you know everything - including their maths homework.
However, much to their surprise and your admission, the reality is that you don't know everything. Doing homework some 15 to 20 (or even many more) years later and accessing that vault labelled 'school education' isn't as easy as it may seem.
Enter South African parents, for many helping with homework can easily be considered an Olympic sport.
Like this mother who was trying to assist her child with their homework, but it turned into an entertaining piece of content that got the parenting community talking.
Mom was instructing her daughter how to complete the exercise, and the child didn't fully understand what was required of her. While it was entertaining for many, it speaks to the fact that, as parents, we sometimes have high expectations of our children.
Adopting a mindset of patience when speaking to kids can save us a world of frustration (and grey hairs).
Watch the video below from Instagram.
This is a classic example of how homework can sometimes be challenging for parents and confusing for their kids. Perhaps schools should have homework workshops that help parents.
The comments on the video reveal that the parenting community has its work cut out for it when it's homework time.
- "Parenting grade 1 is an extreme sport. I feel you."
- "I'm teaching these grade 1s...It takes one to do this to confuse the whole class."
- "That innocent 'mmm'. But I could never be a teacher."
- "Grade 1 is the pits. We're in this together."
- "That kid knows what they were doing. You cannot convince me otherwise."
- "Write with a thing. My patience will never have patience."
- "Most days feel like a round in Hunger Games for me."
