WhatsApp groups can get really controversial...

WhatsApp groups can be something of a fraternity when it comes to some communities.

If you don't follow the rules or your conduct is less than satisfactory, then admins can be cut-throat. Removing you from groups is water off their backs.

But one man was not taking any of that.

"Herbert Baitwababo won a lawsuit against a WhatsApp group administrator who removed him from the ‘Buyanja My Roots’ group in May 2023 after he raised financial management questions." (Nairobi News)

From what we understand, Baitwababo was part of a membership that required members to pay UGX Sh 1,146.94 (Ugandan Shilling), which is around R5.82.

The members of the group pool money together or contribute if someone loses a loved one, or if there is a medical issue that requires treatment.

And the reason he believes he was removed from the group is that he asked the admin for a financial account of their contributions.

Baitwababo raised the question, "We have been paying the money since 2017. Can you give us accountability? Can you please tell us, if is this a legal entity or if it is a sweep away organisation?  What is your mandate? How do you manage it so that we know what type of entity we are dealing with.’ He gave reasons that he has removed me." (Nairobi News)

The court ruled in favour of Baitwababo, saying that he must be reinstated into the group. If the admin failed to add him to the group, then he would be found in contempt, arrested, and jailed.
