Man fakes his death to avoid paying R1.8m child support
Talk about having a death wish!
In South Africa, child support from a parent isn't something that most partners willingly consent to. But there is always the government grant that single parents can rely on.
It seems that asking your partner for child support isn't always as easy as you would think (and that runs true of people everywhere in the world).
One man was adamant not to pay child support so much so that he faked his death.
"A Kentucky man admitted to faking his own death to avoid paying over $100,000 in outstanding child support to his ex-wife, according to a plea agreement filed in federal court late last month." (NBC News)
That's around R 1 875 750,00!
Jesse E. Kipf, 39 went out of his way to make it look like he was no longer. According to his plea agreement, he accessed the Hawaii death registry by using the details of a doctor from another state.
"He then “assigned himself as the medical certifier for the case and certified that case,” which resulted in Kipf being listed as deceased in many government databases." (NBC News)
It is safe to say he cost the government and his ex-wife a lot of money.
"After taking a plea deal, Kipf faces a maximum of seven years in prison and up to $500,000 in fines, per court records." (NBC News)
He was better off paying off the $100,000 instead of all the racketeering he initiated to get out of paying it.
