Grandmothers are doing it for themselves, and this time they get to prance along the catwalk at a beauty pageant dedicated to them.

"The pageant for seniors, which aims to encourage elderly women to remain positive about themselves, was organised by the Sukuma Mbokodo Support Group, established in 2018," reports The Bulrushes.

The beautiful event was held at Yende Street, Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, in May.

The pageant organisers held the event to honour grandmothers. It was a wonderful reminder of their youthfulness and an acknowledgement of their roles in raising their families.

Out of the 15 grandmothers who participated, the one who took the crown was 78-year-old Gogo Margaret Fatyela. Fatyela used to work as a clerk at an engineering company and, like many of the other women, had experienced great loss in her life.

Mama Dizzy Mbuli, the founder of the Sukuma Mbokodo Support Group, shared how the group's soup kitchen provides holistic care for them, as well as for women and children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

She said she started the organisation because she felt grandmothers were being neglected in society. The pageant was a way to help the grandmothers remember their beauty, it provided the community with an opportunity to celebrate these matriarchs who are often forgotten.

"I am happy to see them walking tall and beaming with confidence…they are happy to be here," Mbuli told The Bulrushes.

This was an event that revolved around celebrating the mothers of our nation, grandmothers.
