Asherville Library: A place for growing plants and readers

A place where seeds are planted in our minds and in tyres...

Since something as basic as food has been a longstanding issue for many South Africans, it is important for us to work as a collective.

Coming together as a community to look out for our own is a selfless act and the Asherville community are paying it forward with a food garden.

"In Asherville, the local municipal library now not only has rows of books but also tyres filled with soil and planted with seedlings that should be ready to harvest within two to three months." (IOL)

The food garden hosts a variety of vegetables like spinach, beetroot, chillies, tomatoes, carrots, and cabbage.

The initiative was brought to light by the Vedanta for Life NPO and the Asherville Library.

Devi Munien, the co-founder of the NPO, had this to say: "Seeds, seedlings and free lessons were the incentives to attract volunteers to maintain the gardens while promoting a culture of self-sufficiency in households." (IOL)

We love that the food gardens that are popping up around KZN are aimed at self-sufficiency in households.

Equipping communities with the tools that they need to help themselves is what will sustain them.

"Through Vedanta’s three pillars of focus ‒ community gardens, practical skills development and entrepreneurship development ‒ the programme drives entrenching economic benefit through creating entrepreneurial mindsets." (IOL)
