Carol Ofori joined Soroptimist International, a worldwide volunteer organisation, this weekend at the Adventure into Womanhood event. The event was held to inspire, motivate, and empower Grade 11 girls who come from disadvantaged communities.

The day was filled with treats and spoils for the young girls, talks from special guests, including Carol Ofori, Dr. Pretha Shah - a psychologist and a member of SI from Durban, as well as Careers practitioner and Educator, Ishara Singh.

"The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin word “soror” meaning sister, and “optima” meaning best. Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as 'the best for women'. Soroptimist International Durban is 1 of 6 clubs in South Africa and was established in 1964." (Supplied)

The event took place at Durban Girls Secondary on 20 August and was filled with some fun activities for the young ladies, goodie bags, food, and some tools on how to cope with the transition from school into the next chapter of their lives.

Carol Ofori also got an opportunity to sign some of her books from her collection, 'The Adventures of Sena and Katlego', for the young ladies.

It was an all round women celebrating women event and Carol even wore a dress by the 'Botched Dress' saviour/designer, Silomo from Silomo Boutique.

And being the true sport she is, Carol even participated in a Bollywood dance routine that Bollywood dance champion Jawad taught her and the rest of the ladies.

The president elect of SI, Avasha Singh from uMhlanga, shared that the theme for this year's event was rebuilding KZN one woman at a time. Their focus being turning passion into profit.

Which is quite befitting considering more and more women are breaking societal notions of what they are 'supposed' to be and emerging into what they want to be.
