This year didn't just bring in loads of challenges when it comes to lifestyle and security, it also presented several shortages when it comes to some of South Africa's favourite snacks.
Those snacks that make us feel like we are home, those snacks that bring nostalgia and pure South Africanism. Well, we had to lay many of those snacks to rest this year because of the pandemic and for business innovation. One of the most popular being, the Simba All Gold Tomato Sauce chips that were discontinued this year.
As the team at PepsiCo decided to switch things up with their flavours, they literally put the ball in the consumer's court. And of the choices, the Simba All Gold Tomato Sauce choice got the knock, which left many people disappointed. In addition to the votes, sales were also taken into account.
Then we saw many people trying to vote back the Chocolate Log into production. There was even an online petition that was circulating with fans of the chocolate trying to get it back on shelves. Chocolate purists indeed.
"HP Sauce lovers had a tough year in 2021 after the much-loved UK condiment disappeared from shelves last year. Although retailer Pick n Pay managed to bring back the sauce, it had scant supply of the product." (Business Insider)
Nothing like not finding your favourites on the shelf...
Then there was the Marmite saga...
You either love this or you don't and for many South Africans, Marmite is a must in their grocery cupboards. But since COVID-19 hit us and the consequent alcohol bans, there was a shortage of this product.
Which left many fans savouring what they had left and also upset about the shortage. One of the main ingredients for Marmite is yeast and since that was in short supply, it left many Marmite lovers grumpy. But things have stabilised with the supply and no more grumbly tummies...
