#PeoplesMarch gets underway in KZN

The day has arrived for a so-called 'national shutdown'. South Africans across the country are expected to take to the streets in protest against President Jacob Zuma. There'll be three demonstrations in Durban - all for different causes.

Those calling on the President to step down will march from the circus site on the Durban beachfront to Amphitheatre Park.

Members of the Black Empowerment Foundation will be marching to City Hall in support of Zuma and the government.

Then the ANC Youth League in KZN will be making its way through the Durban city centre - demanding that ABSA pay back apartheid era debt.

The league's Thanduxolo Sabelo says the march is not a pro-Zuma one.

"It's part of our campaign and it will continue to proceed up until Absa pays the money. We did say that we will never stop this campaign until the money is returned to the state and can be invested back into the youth of our country. So it's definitely not a counter march," he said.

While, if you rely on taxi services to commute from point A to B - there's no need to worry.

Boy Zondi from the SA National Taxi Council in KZN has assured commuters that operators won't be taking part in the planned marches.

"I just want to reassure our commuters that it will be a normal day and there will be taxis on our roads. We are not going to be involved in any strike of any nature. It's going to be like yesterday - we will be working full time," he said.

The police's Thulani Zwane says enough officers will be deployed to ensure that police are able to effectively monitor the three demonstrations taking place in Durban today.

"We are appealing to the public to behave themselves - they must march peacefully. We are going to deploy enough members to monitor these marches," he said.
