eThekwini mayor interdicted ahead of city marches

The Durban High Court has granted the DA an urgent interdict against eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede that bars her from inciting any form of violence and prevents her from issuing any instructions to police at tomorrow's marches against the president.

The DA in KZN earlier wrote to Gumede, asking her to retract comments she reportedly made, saying those who take part in the marches will be committing treason.

Speaking to Newswatch from outside the court, the DA's Haniff Hoosen says they gave the mayor ample time to retract her statement, but were forced to go to court for the safety of participants of tomorrow's march.

"We're very satisfied with that order and we're very grateful that we have a justice system in our country that stands up for the rights of South Africans. We are calling on all South Africans to hit the streets tomorrow and to make sure that their rights are being protected - that they have a right to express their views about the direction in which South Africa is going," he said.

But Mayor Gumede maintains she did not make the utterances.

Her spokesperson, Mthunzi Gumede says while they have not yet seen the interdict, the DA jumped the gun by rushing to court.

"The DA went ahead of itself and sought a court interdict on something that does not exist," Gumede said.

He's also urged marchers to not break the law tomorrow.

"We're urging people who are participating in all these marches to obey the law and the rules. There should not be disruptions and destruction of property.

The eThekwini Metro Police say officers will be on the streets tomorrow, monitoring the marches planned for the city.

Both the DA and the KZN ANC Youth League's marches have been given the green light.

The metro police's Sibonelo Mchunu says the DA march will start near Suncoast Casino.

"The assembly point will be at Circus site at the end of Sandile Thusi Road and from Circus site they will go towards the beach. The roads that will be affected will be Sandile Thusi Rd, Old Briekfield Rd (Sylvester Ntuli) as well as Molyneux Boulevard," Mchunu said.

The ANC Youth League says their march will start on Victoria Embankment and they will make their way to the ABSA branch on Anton Lembede Street in the city centre, asking the bank to pay back a R2.2 billion apartheid-era government bailout.

Meanwhile, the ANC in the Greater KwaDukuza Region says it will also be marching to the newly-opened Ballito Junction Mall against "white monopoly capital".
