Zuma to make appearance at Maughan, Downer case

News24 legal journalist Karyn Maughan and the lead prosecutor in Jacob Zuma's corruption case, Billy Downer, will appear in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday morning, after the former president instituted a private prosecution of the duo.

Last year, Zuma laid criminal charges against Downer, accusing him of leaking medical records in his arms deal corruption case, a claim the NPA denies.

The Director of Public Prosecutions declined to prosecute Downer due to insufficient evidence.

He then summonsed Maughan, who he claims the medical records were leaked to, and Downer to appear before court today, where he plans to pursue a private prosecution of the duo over the allegations.

Maughan has since filed an urgent application seeking to set aside the matter.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Jacob Zuma Foundation confirmed that the former president will be present at Monday’s proceedings.

It's Zuma's first public appearance since his 15-month prison sentence expired in an unrelated case.

Zuma was jailed in July last year after the Constitutional Court sentenced him to 15 months in prison for defying its order that he testifies before the state capture commission.

But he served just under two months before he was released on medical parole.

Newly elected ANC chairperson Siboniso Duma and other members of the provincial executive committee will also be present at court.

In a statement released on Sunday night, the party said members will be present to offer their unwavering support to Zuma.
