The five-day conference takes place in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg.

The run-up to the conference was marred by court challenges in several provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal, with disgruntled party members questioning the way in which the ANC runs its affairs.

The battle of delegate credentials is expected to be a drawn out one, as it will decide who will be able to vote for the new leadership.

The top six leadership could also be expanded to a top eight on day one of the conference.

President Jacob Zuma is also expected to deliver his political report today.

Outgoing ANC secretary general, Gwede Mantashe says they are hopeful the party will to emerge unified after the conference.

Mantashe believes Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the two front runners for the ANC presidency, will accept the outcome of the election.
