Zululand municipality wants daytime ban on truck movement
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Zululand District Municipality's called for a daytime ban and strategy to regulate the movement of trucks passing through the area.
Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi wants the vehicles' hours of operation to be limited to 6 in the evening until 6am.
Friday's deadly crash in Pongola thrust truck safety issues back into the spotlight.
Eighteen children were killed when a heavy-duty vehicle slammed into a bakkie transporting school pupils.
Zululand's Zanele Mthethwa says truck traffic volumes have an enormous impact on road infrastructure.

"Councillor Thulasizwe Buthelezi calls for banning of trucks during the day on the R34 from Vryheid to Richards Bay and N2 from Pongolo to Richards Bay.
"Mayor Buthelezi has urged the national Minister of Transport to urgently come up with a strategy to deal with these trucks."
It's a call that echoes the plea for curfews from truck drivers' forum, the ATDF-ASA, which's highlighted driver fatigue and unroadworthy vehicles as key challenges.
