Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
The truck driver in Friday's horrific crash that killed 21 people in Phongolo, northern KZN has been arrested.
Nineteen of the victims were schoolchildren and two were adults.
This was confirmed by the provincial Transport and Community Safety Department on Saturday.
MEC Sipho Hlomuka says the man handed himself over to police.
"Police had launched a manhunt after he fled the scene after the accident yesterday."
Hlomuka had made a call for his immediate arrest.
"In the footage of the accident that is circulating the truck is seen speeding excessively, overtaking on a double barrier line and clearly violating all possible traffic regulations."
The truck was travelling from Piet Retief to Phongolo.
"The driver is expected to appear in the Phongolo Magistrate Court on Monday," says Hlomuka.
He's said to be facing charges of culpable homicide and negligent driving.
