Zikalala: South Africa needs to reflect on spate of massacres
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala says the unacceptably high levels of violent crime and murder in the country should give us pause about the type of nation we are becoming.
He was speaking on Wednesday at a memorial service and candle lighting ceremony for 13 of the 16 people who were gunned down in a Soweto tavern earlier this month.
Thirteen of the victims were from Umzimkhulu in KwaZulu-Natal and were aged between 19 and 35.

"You must know that we have been faced with this situation, but having been faced with this situation, we must equally ask ourselves what had gone wrong with our society; how on earth could a person just open fire on people at random and kill people?" Zikalala questioned.
Zikalala says government should also shoulder some of the blame for failing to create jobs.
