Zikalala slams violent student protests
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The KwaZulu-Natal Premier's Office is warning students that damaging university property during protests won't be tolerated.
"It is shocking that when students embark on a demonstration - having their grievances - they then turn to embark on violent protests. If we burn cars and buildings - this undermines genuine grievances," acting premier, Sihle Zikalala said.
There was protest action at DUT, UKZN, MUT and UNISA yesterday over registrations and other NSFAS-related issues.
Durban University of Technology announced earlier today that it's suspended its academic programme following student protests yesterday.
UKZN also suspended classes yesterday after protesting students set vehicles on fire, and caused other damage to property.

Police are investigating cases of public violence.
Zikalala is calling on police to act decisively against protesters who break the law.
"We also call on student leadership to warn students and guide them not to destroy and burn property, and vehicles. We want to call on both sides to engage and try to find a solution."
