Cooperative Governance MEC Sihle Zikalala says the number of KZN councillors who are in trouble with the law is proof more work still needs to be done to clean up local government.

His comments follow the arrest of Msinga Mayor Mletheni Ndlovu on gun-related charges.

Ndlovu appeared in court on Monday, along with his bodyguards Msawenkosi Malembe and Mvikeleni Mzolo.

NPA KZN spokesperson Natasha Kara says Ndlovu is alleged to have failed to lock away a gun in a safe.

He's also accused of handing it over to a person who's not permitted to carry a firearm.

The bodyguards have been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

"Ndlovu was granted bail of R10 000, while the other two men were granted bail of R1 000 each. They were advised not to interfere with witnesses. The matter was remanded to 21 November 2022, for further investigations."

KZN's Cooperative Governance spokesperson Senzelwa Mzila says councils must enforce their code of conduct and hold representatives accountable.

"The Department of Cogta continues to conduct a number of workshops that are aimed at councillors, various committees within councils and councils in general.

"These trainings are aimed to ensure that councils conduct their business in a manner that is above board and that councillors are equipped and fully comprehend the enormous responsibilities of that tasks they have been given by communities."
