Zikalala declares KZN state of disaster following unrest
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has declared a state of disaster in the province.

The decision has been prompted by the extent of the damage sustained by the province during the recent unrest.
The resolution was taken during a Provincial Executive Council meeting yesterday following deliberations on the state of the province.
He says with the work done so far, the situation is beyond the provincial and municipal capacity to deal with the cost of public riots and unrest as reported.

"We have seen people confusing the provincial state of disaster with the state of disaster that was declared by the president, this is in terms of section 34 (1) (4) b, where we talk about the province in relation to the public infrastructure that was damaged.
"The infrastructure damage is about R1.5 billion and we need to ensure that we rebuild quickly and that will allow us to reprioritise within the budget but also to ask the relevant departments to make more contributions so that we are able to repair or rebuild the public infrastructure that has been damaged."
