Zandile Gumede says she's in the running for mayor: report
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
Chairperson of the ANC's eThekwini region Zandile Gumede is preparing to become the metro's next Mayor.
This as the ANC is expected to release its final list of mayoral candidates soon.
The Mercury newspaper is this morning reporting that Gumede is getting ready to take over from incumbent James Nxumalo after the local government elections in August if the ANC wins the municipality.
She says the appointment will demonstrate the ANC's commitment to ensuring equal representation in leadership positions in local government.
She's however pointed out that the possibility of her occupying the mayoral seat is not only the wish of the KZN ANC Youth League and other party structures, but of the people as well.
Gumede was voted the party's chairperson for the region at an elective conference that was finally held in December after several postponements.
The initial conference that saw Nxumalo elected was declared null and void after claims of vote-rigging surfaced and were investigated.
