Updated | By Tsakane Mhlongo
As the country marks Youth Month, KwaZulu-Natal's Police Commissioner has encouraged young people to consider a career in law enforcement.

Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has also urged the youth to steer clear of crime.
He was speaking at the KZN Excellence Awards at the Durban ICC on Friday night, where top crime-fighting achievers were honoured.
The police chief acknowledged the critical role young people play in strengthening the force.

Mkhwanazi says 34% of the police’s functional workforce in the country is made up of youth.
"This is complemented by a further 10% of young people who are in the police service in KwaZulu-Natal who are performing support service duties. We would have loved to have more youth within our ranks, but it is a work in progress.
"Police’s recruitment for entry level police officers favours the youth, and we appeal to all young people to stay criminal record-free so that they stand a chance to join the police and serve our people without any blemishes."
