The 41-year-old father was arrested at a taxi rank in KwaDabeka this week, after a day on the run.

It is not clear where he was headed at the time of his arrest.

The shocking murders come at a time when voices across the country are calling and shouting for protection for vulnerable women and children.

The motive behind the attacks is still unclear and it remains unknown, for now, what triggered the father to allegedly hang the children.

Relatives who spoke to Newswatch earlier this week claim the suspect had been abusing his wife, the children's mother.

This in contrast to the picture painted by the family's neighbours, who described the man as a humble, quiet and helpful person.

The bodies of 4-year-old Kuhlekonke, 6-year-old Khwezi and 10-year-old Sphesihle Mpungose were found in their home on Tuesday afternoon by their distraught mother and the police.

Their older sister, 16-year-old Ayakha Jiyane was found in a bush in New Germany, west of Durban.

The children's mother, Xoli Mpungose became concerned on Tuesday when the school her youngest children went to phoned her to say the father had picked them up.

Police said this was unusual.

She then went with police to her home where the three youngest children were found.

They then began a search for Ayakha, who was also picked up from school. Her body was found later that night.
