Writing was on the wall for ANC in KZN - analyst

A political analyst says while the African National Congress' (ANC) losses in KwaZulu-Natal may come as a surprise to some, the writing has been on the wall.

"If you look at KZN and if you look at the country, I think it's a really simple analysis. People are fed up and people are fed up at the way the ANC was governing, the corruption, the lack of capacity and all of the issues that we have spoken about a million times and the KZN story is really an interesting one," says analyst Dr Imraan Buccus.

According to the IEC's website, the ANC has less than 50% of seats in the eThekwini Metro.

Where a party does not have the majority vote, a hung council will be declared, paving the way for coalitions.

The ANC's currently sitting with 42% of the vote in the metro, followed by the DA at 27% and the EFF at 11%.

Some 99% of the votes were captured by Thursday morning.

Buccus says it's important to look at the number of people who came to the polls.

"The number of people who voted in KZN is a small number of 1.6 million and if you think about the votes that the ANC got it barely reaches about 750 000.

"So the ANC has had minimal support if one looks at the number of eligible voters in the country. That's a huge and an extraordinary indictment of the ANC. It's a party that was once held so dear by so many, but it seems to be collapsing almost irreversibly.""

We'll be given the full election results picture at this evening.

The IEC says it will make an announcement at 6pm on Thursday on how the country's political parties fared in the local government polls.
