Deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte held a press conference in Pretoria this afternoon on the party's election performance.

She said the low voter turnout in traditional ANC strongholds is a clear message that people are disappointed with the party's slow pace of service delivery and tackling corruption.

"The ANC has heard the message loud and clear. We are more determined than ever to do and be better. We will honour the mandate we have received and the pledge we made to the citizenry.

“We are determined to improve service delivery, accountability as we build better communities, improve basic services, provide safe communities and economic opportunities and build a united, non-racial, non-sexist communities."

Duarte said the ANC continues to maintain its footprint, but will need to shape up ahead of the next polls in 2024.

"The preliminary results indicate that we will have more hung councils than in the previous local elections. This will necessitate the need for coalitions or other forms of cooperation with other political formations. This is nothing new. We have done so since 1994."
