Woman swept off bridge as heavy rains leave trail of disaster across KZN

As the rain continues to pour for a fourth consecutive day, disaster management teams have been dispatched across KwaZulu-Natal following several weather-related incidents.

KZN Cooperative Governance spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila says the downpours have increased the risk of localised flooding and other disruptions. 


"Which include a wall collapse in eThekwini that led to a fatality, a mudslide that has been reported in KwaDukuza. A flooding of the town in Ladysmith and road damage on the south coast. 


"Where possible road diversions and been implemented by disaster management teams working with traffic authorities."

In KwaDukuza, emergency services are at Nonoti River where it's believed a woman has been swept off a bridge. 


IPSS Medical Rescue's Dylan Meyrick says she was trying to cross the low-level bridge earlier on Monday. 


"She was washed off and disappeared in the water. Rescue teams are currently in the area, but nobody had entered the water yet due to the flooding. We are still waiting for witnesses. 


Umdloti has also been affected by mudslides and some roads are closed due to flooding.
