Wildlife rehabilitation centre, CROW, says it's been closely monitoring efforts to stem the oil spill at Umbilo River, which's spread to the Durban Harbour.

Thousands of litres of crude oil leaked into the river at Bellair, south of Durban -- apparently after thieves had tampered with a pipeline belonging to Transnet.

It's since been repaired, but crews are still working to contain the spill, which's had a devastating effect on the environment.
The centre's Alex Krogl says a variety of wildlife and aquatic life rely on the river and vegetation.
She says they haven't received reports of animals harmed but are prepared.
"We have all the necessary tools and equipment we use a very specialised soap, so we are ready. It's a very serious thing, but animals should get medical attention immediately."
She says you can contact CROW for help, if you find animals affected by the spill.
