Westcliff residents 'in the dark' over power cuts

The frustrated community of Westcliff in Chatsworth say they’ve received no answers for far too long regarding inconsistent electricity supply in their area.

One of the residents, Rashnee Singh, is recovering from a spinal operation.

She says having no electricity in this cold weather has been hard to bear.

Singh explained that on Sunday evening they experienced normal load shedding, but within seconds of the lights coming back, they were turned off again.

"It has not come back on since then. I am unable to manage because I had a spinal operation. I have a niece who is also unwell. We are barely making it because what do you do? You can't even go outside to do anything and nobody seems to be able to assist us."

Ward Councillor for the south Durban area, Tony Govender, says he's been in constant contact with the electricity department trying to get answers about the cause of the outage and when supply will be restored.

"They have been saying it is this and that fault, that these people are coming [technicians] and all promises are being made. I have been keeping residents in the loop with all my communications on the WhatsApp groups.

"I [went] to the depot yesterday and I was told it has been handed over to the faults team and they would sort it out.

Then late yesterday evening I was told by the superintendent that it was a medium volt double cable fault."

A technical team has been assigned to the issue.
