It's in response to severe storm warnings issued for these areas.

Education MEC David Maynier says they've received reports that several schools were damaged by strong winds over the weekend.

"Our default position is always to keep schools open, but we are mindful of the severity of the weather warnings in place. We have not taken the decision to close these schools lightly. We have done so out of an abundance of caution."

The South African Weather Service issued a level 9 warning for damaging winds and rain in many parts of the province.

Strong winds have already battered various regions, fuelling fires, particularly in the Cape Winelands, most of which have been contained.

Premier Alan Winde says all disaster management and emergency service teams remain on high alert.

"We have a lot of loose roof sheets and debris flying around. Roof sheets flying around in high wind is very dangerous, and it can really hurt people. So we need you to be safe and be careful. Our teams are out across this province and will be dealing with closing off roads to remove the danger."
