SA energy crisis ‘only getting worse’, says association

Some ratepayers' associations in KwaZulu-Natal fear the country's energy crisis is only going to get worse.

They have been reacting to Nersa's decision to approve the code of practice for Eskom to enable the utility to implement load shedding from stage 1 to stage 16.

The move is meant to prevent a total collapse of the power grid.

Anthony Waldausen, who's with the Msunduzi Association of Residents, Ratepayers and Civics, says the energy crisis hasn't been adequately addressed.

"Residents need to invest in alternative energy savings, methods to maybe get off the grid and become more self-reliant and less dependent on Eskom."

The eThekwini Ratepayers Association's Ish Praladh says he's lost faith in the utility's ability to improve the grid.

He says cable theft is a huge concern for Durbanites.

"Areas like Reservoir Hills, Chatsworth, Kenville, Avoca have a large influx of informal settlements, and that was not catered for on the grid. How is eThekwini going to handle for this, because it allowed this to happen?"

Energy expert Tshepho Kgadima has also weighed in on Nersa's decision.

"This is insanity, to say the least. One thing is very clear, though: at this juncture, there is an urgent and desperate need for Operation Murambatsvina in both Cabinet and Eskom and Nersa."
