Water supply to Durban improves as Umgeni Water completes aqueduct repairs

Residents in Umlazi, Chatsworth, Northdene and other areas, south of Durban can breathe a sigh of relief.

Umgeni Water's completed repairs to an aqueduct at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant. 


"That is good news because that will provide an additional amount of water to be treated at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant," says Umgeni Water spokesperson Shami Harichunder.

"This means there will be an additional amount of water available to supply to eThekwini." 


Work to fix the leak began over a week ago, with residents receiving water from reservoirs in high-lying areas being told to expect low pressure or disruptions to their supply. 


"The leak was in Reservoir Hills in Durban and it was leaking quite profusely. That work has been completed, what is left to be done now are the earthworks and rehabilitation of the road," says Harichunder.

"This pipe runs underground so it had to be exposed and we had to dig up the road in order to get to the pipe. The contractor was well ahead of schedule and the work was completed two days before the allocated time."
