The uThukela District Municipality says it has to go this route due to a drop in water levels at Klip River and a lack of rainfall.

It says it's been forced to pump water a few hours a day.

Residents have had to get acquainted with a water-shedding schedule this week, that will be implemented between 8 in the evening and 5 am.

The municipality's Jabulani Mkhonza says the Ladysmith CBD, suburbs, Steadville, Danskraal and Umkhamba Gardens, Model Kloof, Observation Hill, Acaciavale and Roosboom are among the affected areas.

He's urging residents to use water sparingly during this period or face fines

"Car washers filling up of swimming pools using the sprinter system and watering of garden will be restricted until further notice.

"In a sense, car washes businesses will be permitted to operate only four days per week. We urge our public to bare with us because we are trying to save water for human consumption and nothing else so the situation remains critical."

Meanwhile, Residents in KwaDukuza have also been hit by a double whammy of power outages and water interruptions.

The iLembe District Municipality says the latest round of load shedding has compounded the situation further.

The community of Ward 16 was last week hit by electricity outages that affected its water supply.

Due to the power problems - pumps at the Balancing reservoir and Kearsney pump station were placed on downtime until the weekend.

iLembe’s Acting Senior Manager of Technical Services, Cingisa Mbola, says the downtime compromised water flow to the Glenhills, Stanger Manor, Warrenton and High Ridge reservoirs - bringing down water levels.

Mbola says they’ve pumped their reservoirs to full capacity but load shedding's causing more headaches.
