He says while six generation units at five power stations came back yesterday - there've been further problems leading to the system being severely constrained.

"There were four breakdowns overnight and this morning and those were at Medupi, Duvha, Majuba, and Lethabo power stations.

"Should there be any further deterioration in the generation performance system this may necessitate the escalation of load shedding at short notice.

"We wish again to remind the people that this constrained power system is set to persist for the rest of the week," says Mantshantsha.

The South African Weather Service issued an alert for KwaZulu-Natal, saying parts of the province is expected to experience a cold front on Tuesday.

The cold snap has dumped snow in parts of the Western Cape.

It's moving into KZN today, with overnight temperatures of between minus 5 and 11 degrees expected in the province.
