Water restrictions in place despite recent KZN rainfall

EThekwini residents might have to endure water restrictions in the near future, with the Umgeni water system which supplies most of Durban and the Umgungundlovu District under strain.

Umgeni Water says the system, including Midmar and Inanda dams, among others, is not in a healthy state due to inadequate rainfall.

The utility's Shami Harichunder says the severe drought has seen Midmar Dam's level drop to 49%.

He says recent rains over the last 10 days have seen some improvements at Hazelmere Dam but not enough to remove restrictions in areas north of Durban.

"There's still a deficit in the amount of rainfall that is generally received. On average, during the Spring and Summer months - about 80ml of rainfall is received within the Hazelmere catchments.

"The deficit still stands at a significant level. The level of the dam today is 31.69%," he said.

Residents are being urged to continue saving water.
