"On May the 18th, the Umgeni System joint operations committee will evaluate the water resources in the Umgeni system - which is the system that supplies Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Umgungundlovu. The committee will then decide on the issue of restrictions," the utility's Shami Harichunder said.

The utility's Shami Harichunder says the current average dam level is 72% with 70% being the minimum requirement for the lifting of restrictions.

He says the Ministry of Water will have the final say on whether the restrictions can be lifted or not.

Meanwhile, Harichunder says that Albert Falls is still a concern.

"Albert Falls is a strategically important dam. It supplies the water needs of a large part of Durban and the eThekwini region. Now, we need to see this dam rise waterrestrup to at least 60% before we can say that the water resource situation in the Umgeni system has improved significantly," Harichunder said.
