Water cuts won't affect schooling: Education dept

The Education Department is teaming up with local government and municipalities - to ensure that water restrictions don't interfere with teaching and learning at KZN's schools.

Members of the public have expressed their frustration over the recent reinstatement of 15% water restrictions to the greater Umgeni River system.

Last year, some schools sent their pupils home - due to a lack of water on the school premises as a result 'water shedding'.
The education department's Muzi Mahlambi says water restrictions should not be allowed to affect the regular teaching programme.
"Even if there's water restrictions, we can still continue teaching and learning even if we lessen the hours. In other cases where it is humanly and materially possible - there is provision of water tanks in order to cater for that," he said.
