Water, power disruptions close KZN schools

Pupils have been unable to attend classes at two schools in KwaZulu-Natal this week due to problems with electricity and water.

Learning at Mthwazi Combined School in the uMkhanyakude District has been disrupted as staff fear illegally connected electricity at the school poses a serious threat to learners.

The school's power supply was cut several weeks ago leading to the illegal connection.

The Education Department's Muzi Mahlambi says they are trying to find out who who is behind this.

''We are very much optimistic that the perpetrators of this are going to desist from these kinds of activities so that on Monday we will resume with normal schooling,'' he said.

At the same time authorities say technicians are currently repairing three burst pipes in Newlands East in Durban - that have left residents without water for almost one week.

The municipality's Richard Mngoma says a valve which supplies Roseland Primary School and surrounding roads also burst - forcing the school to send children home over hygiene concerns.

Officials say they hope to have the water supply restored soon.
