Many communities were gripped by fear as chaotic protest action and rampant looting continued for the fourth night.

One man, who preferred to stay anonymous, says no one slept a wink in Phoenix.

"Specifically the Brookdale area, there has been running gun battles since last night, gunshots in the air, smoke-filled air. The men of our area are standing guard at different roads in the outskirts of Phoenix.

"Our wives and families and our children are living in fear. We don't know what to expect. We need the army to be deployed to Phoenix, we are not sure about the future and we really need help here."
