WATCH: SAWS assesses damage after Vaal 'tornado' scare
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The SA Weather Service says they will have to assess the damage in the Vaal Marina area before it can be confirmed that it was indeed a tornado that ripped through the area late yesterday afternoon.
Roofs were blown off, structures destroyed and power lines toppled.
"We had supercell thunderstorms in the Vaal area. Looking at the damage that we will have to assess - it is looking like a tornado. In Gauteng, we still have a watch for severe thunderstorms. It is possible to still have hail and strong and gusty winds.
"However, today we are not lookig at the same windy conditions as yesterday," forecaster, Victoria Nurse says.
ER24's Werner Vermaak says various emergency services received the distress call. They arrived at the Vaal Marina area, to find 50 people with minor injuries.
"Twenty-five of them were treated on the scene and another 25 were transported by the various services to a nearby hospital," he says.
