WATCH: Protests close major roads in KZN

A number of areas in KwaZulu-Natal have been declared no-go zones due to protesters barricading major roads.

The protesters took to the streets in the early hours of Friday morning.

Videos and photos have been circulating on social media whereby people at these protests are expressing their anger over the imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma.

In Durban, over five areas are confirmed to have been disrupted by burning tyres, stones and debris.

eThekwini Metro Police's Parboo Sewparsad says cleanup operations are underway.

"The N2 has been opened up and the roadway has been cleared we are dealing with the cleanup operations at Alpine Road and Umgeni Road. E Section in Ntuzuma is a no-go zone. M27 is still closed, we are waiting for a cleanup team to come out."

 N3 Toll Concession spokesperson Thania Dhoogra said: "No protests so far this morning fortunately. Law enforcement are out and about on the route monitoring the situation however, and ready to respond should the situation change"
