WATCH: N3 at Mooi River closed after protests, vehicle torchings

The N3 Toll Concession says the entire route in the vicinity of the Mooi River Toll Plaza remained closed on Saturday morning in the wake of violent protests.

Multiple trucks travelling on the N3 were torched overnight.

"Twenty-three heavy motor vehicles, including a tanker carrying highly flammable dangerous goods and a car carrier, were touched during the course of the night," the concession’s operations manager Thania Dhoogra said.

"Some of the vehicles are still burning. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

Dhoogra urged all motorists to avoid the area for now.

She says police are there, but earlier, they were told that stones were being thrown. Gunshots also rang out.

"Firefighters and emergency services are working to extinguish the fires as soon as possible so that clean up operations can commence. The road will remain closed until recovery and clean up operations have been completed."

Meanwhile, on Friday night, paramedics responding to a medical emergency in Mount Edgecombe, north of Durban, were blocked by protesters on the Duffs Road bridge last night.

They made a u-turn and took another route to assist their patient. A woman, in her late 80s, who'd collapsed in her home.
