"It is our view that to detain a person without trial is a provocation. So we call upon the authorities to remove the provocation so that calm can be automatically restored."

Traffic was affected or stopped on major routes, including the N2, the N3 and the cargo transit route of the M7.

Manyi's described the Pietermaritzburg High Court's ruling on Friday as malicious.

It dismissed Zuma's urgent application for a stay of his arrest for contempt of court.

"Whats is the point? What is there to be gained by president Zuma being in jail whilst those who decided to be in jail are still involved in the discussion to establish whether what they did was right or not. So why keep him in jail while you are still arguing about how he did this thing."
