WATCH: Illegal connection electrocutes firefighter at Durban shack blaze
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Paramedics say a firefighter was hurt while he was trying to extinguish a blaze in Clairwood, south of Durban.
Emergency crews went to douse the flames at an informal settlement, along Sidar Road, on Thursday night.
Emer-G-Med medics treated a firefighter on the scene, who suffered an electric shock after touching an illegal electricity connection.
No one else was hurt.
eThekwini Municipality's spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela says they'll be assessing the damage on Friday and will provide assistance for those affected.
He's made an appeal to communities.
"Assist us in ridding our communities of these illegal connections because they do not only pose a serious threat to our lives as members of the community, but they also put in danger the lives of emergency personnel that comes to our community only to save our lives."
