eThekwini asks public to avoid swimming at port after E. coli contamination
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
eThekwini Municipality officials are continuing to monitor the levels of E. coli at Durban's beaches.
This after a sewage pump malfunctioned due to load shedding.
You can still go for a swim, but the city is asking people to stay out of the water at Durban Harbour after a sewerage leak earlier this week.
Repairs have been taking place at the Mahatma Gandhi sewage pump station.
eThekwini's spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela's assured bathers that the water quality at beaches is safe.
"They seem to be indicating that they are at acceptable standards, meaning that the public can embark on any recreational activity in our beaches.
"However, the water at our port is still not looking good and as a result, fishing and diving is still prohibited. We will then inform the public once the water quality has improved at the port."
