WATCH: Frustrated residents protest outside parental home of Chatsworth councillor

Illegal connections and an overloaded power system have been given as the reasons for a five-day power outage in Chatsworth.

Crossmoor residents had to creatively come up with solutions to keep warm until their electricity supply was finally restored on Monday.

Resident Shantal Terunal says they had no idea as to the cause of the outage.

"Some people are saying they are having cold showers. Some people are lighting fires outside. So we managed to get gas to warm up water, but it's only so long you can do that because it's also not safe."

Ward 71 councillor Previn Vedan says Crossmoor has been experiencing power issues for years.

He says eThekwini is trying to find a permanent solution.

"When there was an outage many residents went and added more illegal connections to the substation.

"So after load shedding when the substation came on because of the mass connection to it, it caught light and it burnt now a substation is something that costs about R1.5 million rand, it's not some the department keeps on hand.

"So we have had to have one ordered from Johannesburg and it still hasn't arrived in our community as yet."
