WATCH: Dramatic rescue after man stuck in trench for hours

A man, believed to be in his 30s, has been rescued after he'd been stuck in a trench for almost six hours next to a house in Kloof, west of Durban.

It's understood the contractor was part a team that had been digging a trench next to the home, when the surrounding walls collapsed - trapping him in the soil.

ER24's Werner Vermaak says they were called out to the property at around 2pm yesterday.

"One of the workers was actually trapped in the trench right up to his neck. When the initial rescue started, it was ER24 guys and they tried to get him out as soon as possible.

"However, they quickly realised that more specialised equipment and rescue teams had to come through to the scene and assist. It doesn't help you opening up an area to have the walls of the trench collapse again," he said.

Vermaak says members of the fire department, SAPS and other emergency crews arrived to help.

He says they tried their best to keep the contractor as calm as possible while they worked to free him.

"He was definitely stressed with all the rescue equipment around him - it's a very difficult situation. So, that's where paramedics have to be skilled in coming forward, keeping in constant communication and telling the patient exactly what's going on.

"The moment you stop communicating with your patient, that is when they start feeling out of the loop and they don't know what is the next step or whether they will survive," he said.

Vermaak says the contractor, who was rescued after 8pm yesterday was in a lot of pain. The man is receiving treatment in hospital for several injuries - including injuries to his chest.
