Today's expected to be one of the biggest shopping days of the year.

A tradition carried out in the US, Black Friday marks the official start of the Christmas shopping season.

Some buyers who spoke to Newswatch in Umhlanga say they've been up since 3am to get to shops early. Others say they camped out in front of stores at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in the hopes of getting their hands on discounted items first.

While some shoppers feel they're getting a good deal, others say the discounts aren't that great.

"It's one day in a year so I'm going to buy all I can," one shopper says.

"This TV is R4999 - it's actual price is probably R10 000," another buyer says.

One customer said: "This is as good a price you'll find any time of the year. People are overwhelmed with Black Friday and just getting carried away."
