WATCH: Bollywood, curry, and a love for Indian culture drives Logie Naidoo
Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
There's more to former eThekwini speaker Logie Naidoo than just politics (and a sharp sense of style); he's also a proud Durbanite who's passionate about his Indian heritage.
Born in the predominantly-Indian suburb of Tongaat, north of Durban, Naidoo says Heritage Day (24 September) is a day he holds dear to his heart.
"It's a time where I can celebrate my heritage, my origins with my friends and family," he says.
Of Tamil descent, Naidoo says he tries to reflect his origins in his everyday life - in both his dress sense, and his daily routines.
And he admits that not a day goes by without him starting his morning with a cup of masala chai (a type of Indian tea), and ending it off with a good curry.
But while he's proudly Indian, he's multi-cultural too - something Naidoo often tries to express in his fashion choices.
It's his love for his culture, and especially for Durban, which has seen Naidoo unashamedly celebrating his proud heritage at various public and private events - where he's been known to serenade guests with renditions of some golden Bollywood oldies.
He says Durban is one of the greatest places to live in - because of the religious tolerance locals have for each other's beliefs.
Naidoo also praised religious institutions for not imposing their beliefs on others, in spite of their close juxtaposition to each other in communities across KZN.
Naidoo says that Durban boasts a unique cultural heritage, especially in the arts.
A firm believer in the concept of ubuntu, Naidoo says he would like to see the integration of more cultures and races.
He's encouraged the different racial and cultural groups in the country to truly embrace the ideals of a proud Rainbow Nation.
