Warning of possible water outages in eThekwini on Friday

Umngeni-Thukela has warned of possible water supply interruptions in eThekwini on Friday.

Durban residents are fuming about a water outage that affected large parts of the city related to an eThekwini municipality labour dispute that has disrupted services.

The Durban Heights Water Treatment plant is about to enter a planned maintenance shutdown.

“This is to allow for the removal of a steel plate previously installed in aqueduct two to isolate the flow of water while repairs are in progress.

“The shutdown will also include the installation of a double isolation facility, which will enable the contractor to continue working on the aqueduct in preparation for its recommissioning in December.”

The utility's Siyabonga Maphumulo says this will help recover bulk water infrastructure damaged during the April floods last year.

He has appealed to residents uMhlanga, Durban North, Phoenix, Westville, and uMlazi to please use water sparingly on Friday.

“Our appeal to communities is that they must not consume additional water such as washing clothes, cars, watering their gardens or filling up swimming pools during this time as this will prolong the recovery time of the treatment plant."
